Girl Scout Promise                                       Girl Scout Law

On my honor I will try,                                     I will do my best to be

To serve God and my country,                          Honest and fair,

To help people at all times,                              Friendly and helpful,

And to live by the Girl Scout Law.                     Considerate and caring,

Courageous and strong, and

Responsible for what I say and do,

And to

Respect myself and others,

Respect authority,

Use resources wisely,

Make the world a better place, and

Be a sister to every Girl Scout.

History

Troop 379’s Explorer unit was officially chartered on April 30, 1959 with Ronnie Sugiyama as its first advisor. In 1970, the Explorers became coed and in 1971, the girls were recruited to participate in the Drum & Bugle Corps as Color Guards.

In 1982 after a brief period of inactivity, the Explorer Post was reactivated as an all girls group. Almost all of the Explorers participated in the Drum & Bugle Corps as a tall flag group. Although the goals of the Explorer Post were to develop leadership and character, to provide cultural awareness, and to explore various career interests, there was interest in forming a more structured scouting program. In 1993, the Girl Scout Troop was established to meet these needs.

To continue the ongoing legacy of Koyasan Troop 379, it was pertinent to have the Girl Scout Troop bear “379”; however, at that time, the number was already issued to a Huntington Beach Troop.  Because Koyasan Troop had over 60 years of scouting history, the Huntington Beach Troop graciously consented to accord Koyasan “379” for the Girl Scout Troop.

Koyasan Girl Scout Troop 379 continues the tradition of the Koyasan Troop 379 as well as participates in the Drum & Bugle Corps performances.  The Girl Scout Troop is involved with the world largest organization for women and girls, and a member of the Belmont Neighborhood, Angeles Girl Scout Council.

Program

The Girl Scout program is similar to the Boy Scout program, in that there are achievements and advancements.  The foundation of the Girl Scout Program is built on the Girl Scout Promise & Law and the four goals - developing ones full individual potential, relating to others, developing values, and contributing to the improvement of society.

The Girl Scout program is broken into five groups: Daisies (ages 5-6), Brownies (ages 6-8), Juniors (ages 8-11), Cadettes (ages 11-14), and Seniors (ages 14-17).  Seniors have the opportunity to become adult leaders after achieving their “Gold Award”.

The “Gold Award” is the highest award in Girl Scouting and comparable to Eagle in Boy Scouts.  The “Silver Award” is the second highest award and earned by Cadettes.

Gold Awards:  1997, 1998(2), 2003, 2005(2)

Silver Awards:  2001(2), 2002(2), 2006(4)
