Shingon Buddhism

is a religion that was established by Kobo-Daishi at the beginning of the Heian period (9th century). This form of esoteric Buddhism is also known in Japanese as “mikkyo” (secret teaching) and is one of several streams of practice within the Mahayana Buddhist tradition.

Esoteric Buddhism places strong emphasis on rituals, especially involving the recitation of sacred words (mantra). Shingon means “true word”.  Origins of some esoteric Buddhist rituals can be traced to the culture of pre-aryan India, about 4-5,000 years ago.

Mikkyo involves the practice of the Three Mysteries (San-mitsu), symbolic activities of the Body (Shin-mitsu), Speech (Ku-mitsu), and Mind (I-mitsu).

Form mudras with your hands,

recite mantras with your mouths,

and dwell in meditation with your minds”

~~~ Kobo-Daishi
According to the teachings of Kobo-Daishi, the religious way of the Shingon Mission aims at enlightenment in this life by transforming the human conditions to cosmological terms through the acts of the Three Mysteries; forming the mudra (Gassho), chanting the mantra (Shingon), and meditating (Samadhi). It is a way of finding everlasting peace and becoming Buddha himself in this existence through the three religious acts.
*Enlightenment is the blessed state marked by the absence of desire or suffering
