LOS ANGELES KOYASAN TAIKO GROUP

The Koyasan Taiko Group is a Buddhist group that uses Taiko as a means of understanding Buddhist principles. The training has a spiritual component with a focus on learning about oneself through drumming. Emphasis is placed on discipline, focus, individual growth, and teamwork.  The group and instructions will begin on October 5th. Classes will be held at 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm every Friday evenings.

Taiko literally mean “big drum” and refers to several forms of Japanese drumming. Taiko is an honored traditional cultural activity in Japan. The drums are used to express a person’s spirit or feelings and are played at religious ceremonies, festivals, cultural programs, music recitals and folk dancing events.

Bishop Seicho Asahi is the instructor.  He has formed the Koyasan Spirit of Children Taiko Group in Sacramento in 1993.  Now, the Bishop will be starting the Los Angeles Koyasan Taiko Group in October.  He will not only be teaching on how to play the Taiko drums; but also on how to make the drums.

Taiko is not hard to learn; however, regular class attendance and practice at home is important. It helps to have at least some rhythm, the ability to concentrate, and be physically fit. Age should not discourage anyone from taking the lessons. Children should be at least 7 years of age.

Practice will be held weekly at the Koyasan Buddhist Temple, 342 E. First St. in Little Tokyo.  The monthly due is $40.00 for adults and $30.00 for children.  There is a $5.00 discount for members of the Koyasan Betsuin.  Please sign up early due to the limited class seats by calling (213) 624-1267 or email lakoyasan@sbcglobal.net .
