Koyasan Buddhist Temple,

officially known as “Koyasan Beikoku Betsuin” of Los Angeles, is located on East First in Little Tokyo area near the Civic Center. The Temple belongs to the Koyasan Shingon Mission founded by Kobo-Daishi (774-835 A.D.) and refers to one of the Mahayana Buddhist Schools. The Temple serves as the headquarters of the Koyasan Shingon Mission for mainland United States.

History

The Koyasan Buddihist Temple, formerly known as “Daishi Kyokai” was founded in the Fall of 1912 by Reverend Shutai Aoyama. It was originally located near Elysian Park in Los Angeles.  In 1914, the Daishi Kyokai was moved to Commercial Street and then in 1920 to Central Avenue near the present site of the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles. In 1934, it was elevated to the status of “Koyasan Beikoku Betsuin.” In 1940, just before the outbreak of World War II, the present Temple building was constructed on East First Street in the area known as “Little Tokyo” under the direction of Bishop Seytsu Takahashi. The Temple’s main hall was popularly called “Koyasan Hall” and frequently used for cultural activities of the local Japanese communities till the 1980s.
