WELCOME to the official website of the Los Angeles Koyasan Betsuin, headquarters of the Koyasan Shingon Mission for mainland United States.  This website was developed to help promote the mission of the Koyasan Betsuin.  By providing an introduction to Shingon Buddhism and a glimpse of the Temple activities and events, we hope that you will find this site a valuable resource and window to the religion established by Kobo-Daishi (Kukai) and to the culture and traditions of Koyasan.

The website is divided into six major sections:

§    Temple and History

v       A brief outline introduces you to the Los Angeles Koyasan Betsuin.

v       The page steps through the history of the Temple from the time of our Temple’s founder, Reverend Shutai Aoyama, to the present.  A photo gallery is under construction and will soon be available to provide you a glimpse of the past.

§    Calendar, Services and Events

v       Calendar by month and year lists the Temple services (as Hoshi-Matsuri, Ohigan, Hanamatsuri, and Obon), and activities. Because of schedule changes, please check the page for the latest dates and times.

v       Information on the various services conducted at the Temple is provided.

v       Upcoming and past events for the year are listed.  Community events are also listed for our viewers who may be interested in visiting the localities.  Announcements and news are posted on this page.

§    People and Organizations

v       This page acquaints you with the ministers and people, who helped establish, shape, and direct the Temple’s mission.

v       The following organizations are an integral part of the Temple’s program: ABA (Adult Buddhist Association), YABA (Young Buddhist Association), Fujin-Kai (Women’s Association), Eiyu-Kai (Advance and Intermediate Goeika), and Daishi-Ko.  The page is in development. The information presented will allow members and affiliates to see other avenues of support for the Temple.

v       The Koyasan Scout Troop 379 site provides a look into the program and activities of its Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Venture Unit. The “family” troop is hosted by Koyasan Betsuin.

§    Shingon Buddhism

v       The basic teachings of Shingon Buddhism are introduced. This page will provide you answers to some general questions on Buddhism.

v       The section’s “Sunday School” presents a religious lesson that will be updated monthly.  The lessons are from the English translations of “The Teaching of the Shingon-Shu” published by the Koyasan Headquarter Propagation Division. The feature of this month is on the “Ten Precepts”.

§    Shikoku Pilgrimage

v       With the guidance of Bishop Emeritus Taisen Miyata and Bishop Seicho Asahi, we will take you on a journey in the footsteps of Kobo-Daishi on a circuit of the Shikoku Island and to Mount Koya. This section has not yet been developed; but, please check the page as features will be added in time.

v       “A Henro Pilgrimage Guide to the 88 Temples of Shikoku Island, Japanis available for purchase at the Los Angeles Koyasan Betsuin.
